5. Course of action and personal suggestions
I personally respect the seriousness of the virus. I stay home and order groceries delivery to reduce the chance of meeting people. I think Wal-Mart’s decision are tactical but needs more care about their worker. In this ethical situation, follow up their workers’ healthiness situation is important – showing they care about workers rather than treating them like data can effectively reduce social panic. Comparing the policies they have currently, they paid leave workers without further follow-up, providing more care about their lives is more impact to workers and is able to let them feel the positive atmosphere of society. Thus, worker will spread the positive energy to their family and friends.
Moreover, workers should treat their healthiness as first priority instead of working. One concept we mentioned in class: reducing personal responsibility from Moral Disengagement: displacement of responsibility would apply to this. The worker who has low salaries are staying an attitude which the supervisor made me do it. They, therefore, don’t realize the seriousness of virus spreading and blame on the company.

According to previous blog, we can see the hard work they have made to keep customers and faculties aware importance of social distancing. From social network sites, I can see that a few people are staying positive, but most are negatives. Some of them don’t understand the seriousness, showing aggressive attitude towards the decision. There are so many workers asking their jobs back from Wal-Mart after they deploy them home.
A lady as customer posted a twitter showing a video: an Asian lady touch all laptops in Wal-Mart for no reasons. The “Robbie Zombie” blogger tries to stop her but didn’t help. (1) The lady shows aggressiveness and revenge attitude to society. She might have suffer some unfair treatment from society but her behavior is increasing troublesome to Wal-Mart faculties and the risk of coronavirus’ spread.

One Wal-Mart worker is in opposite situation. She walked out in protest of her workplace condition. The girl Maya needs salary to support herself and her families, but she is worried that every time she goes to work, she will bring danger to her life and those she loves. “We’re just open. We interact with everyone. We touch everything,” she said. “It’s really unsafe and unsanitary to be working in those conditions, knowing what’s going on.” According to Maya, her supervisors did little to ensure that others didn’t become infected. They did not disclose the name of their sick coworker or provide any testing to those that came into contact with them. And, she said, several workers were sent home without pay for wearing masks.
“To my brother, Walmart was family. But to Walmart, my brother was just a number,” McMiller, another Wal-Mart worker said. “They didn’t follow up on him. No one knew he was sick until I called.”
“We have heard from stores across the country that Walmart has not been doing enough to make associates feel safe,” Maya said. “Walmart’s profit margins matter more than us. We’re not essential. We’re sacrificial. I will be replaced if I die from this. I don’t have a mask or gloves. The only thing I have is a stupid blue vest.”
It seems like Wal-Mart can’t execute the policies and adjustments to everywhere and taking care about everyone. Low-wage essential workers across industries — from grocery store employees to bus drivers and delivery workers — find themselves in a similar situation to Walmart workers. They cannot work from home and aren’t afforded the health precautions that the CDC is advising Americans to take. And the majority of those workers are people of color, according to a study by the Economic Policy Institute. Walmart, for example, is the largest employer of African Americans and Latinx workers in the country.
Even if there are so many negative comments under this special circumstance, there are some customers show understanding and provides some suggestion as comments. One netizen “Navywill88” says: “Better bring your groceries list. And make sure its organized by section if the one direction traffic part is true. I always doubles back constantly because I’ll pick up milk, leave the section for the next thing on the list, then be back 5 feet from it to get eggs a minute later. ” Their attitude shows their supportive behavior to Wal-Mart team and care about society.
In my opinion, workers’ situation is understandable – they need money to survive and pay rent, take care about families etc. Their healthy, however, should be their first priority to take care, and that’s Wal-Mart’s main goal currently. Wal-Mart and low salaries worker’s point of views are conflict, they can’t understand each other’s situation.

3. Wal-Mart’s action
When we go into Wal-Mart’s official website, we can see at the top of site that there is a yellow bar. It claims the changes they have made in order to provides more convenience and benefits to customers in current situation.

They listened to many customers’ advice, supporting delivery and set many entrances for queuing customers for social distancing.
In the statement of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Wal-Mart decides to make many changes. For example, expanding paid leave policies, beginning temperature checks, start making gloves and masks for associates.

They have mad many changes and showing deeply care about their employee’s healthy. For social distancing, Wal-Mart regulate the number of customers who can be in a store at once. Once a store reaches its capacity, customers will be admitted inside on a “1-out-1-in” basis. To manage this restriction, store employees will mark queues on single-entry doors (in most cases, grocery store entrances) and take arriving customers directly there and count them one by one.
They listened advice from medical experts, associates and customers. They put a number of signage inside stores to remind everyone in the store of remaining social distancing – especially in lines. Moreover, once customers check out, they will be guided through a different door than when they entered, which will help reduce the situation of people approaching each other.
In my opinion, these adjustments are showing deeply care about their employees, customers and everyone else’ healthy. They try their best to reduce face to face contact as much as possible. I respect that, and I wish all customers respect that as well. Their effective management moved me. It’s amazing how they can regulate the customers orderly under this level of social panic. I respect their decision, and I wish all customers respect that as well. Their effective management moved me.

2. introducing Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart Inc. is an American multinational retail enterprise headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. It is the first in the ranking of the world’s largest 500 companies selected by the US “Fortune” magazine in 2014-2018. It is also the world’s largest private employer, with more than two million employees, and is the world’s largest retailer. Wal-Mart is still a family business. Its controlling shareholder is the Walton family, which owns 48% of Wal-Mart.

According to the 2019 Fortune Global 500 list, Wal-Mart is the world’s largest company by revenue, with revenue of US $ 514.405 billion. It is also the world’s largest private employer, with 2.2 million employees. This is a publicly traded family business because the company is controlled by the Walton family. Sam Walton ’s heirs own more than 50% of Wal-Mart ’s shares through the shares held by its holding company, the Walton Enterprise Group and its individuals. Wal-Mart is the largest grocery retailer in the United States in 2019, with 65% of Wal-Mart ’s $ 510.329 billion in sales coming from US operations.
Walmart (Walmart) was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. By 1988, Walmart (Walmart) became the most profitable retailer in the United States, and by October 1989, it had become the largest retailer by revenue. The company was initially geographically limited to the lower regions of the South and Midwest, but by the early 1990s, it had many stores in the coastal areas. Sam’s Club opened in New Jersey in November 1989, and opened its first California branch in Lancaster, California in July 1990. In October 1990, Wal-Mart opened in York, Pennsylvania, which was the first head office in the Northeast region.
Their mission and vission is Every Day Low Price (EDLP): which is the cornerstone of Wal-Mart strategy, and its price focus has been strong. In order to provide one-stop shopping convenience to customers, they included items from groceries and entertainments to sporting goods and craft.

Recently, Corona-virus, aka COVID-19 , has been crazily spread out since December of last year. My university has transferred all related activities to the online form to keep students safe and largely reduced the demands of going out. The virus changed mostly everyone’s lifestyle: people can’t go to the party, can’t hangover, can’t go to public assembly. Everyone tries to get as many groceries as possible. Moreover, the finance and economy in our society is a mass right now. Groceries companies like Wal-Mart, Wegmans, Costco have increased ton of sales revenue. They had donated millions dollars to help on prevent Coronavirus’ spread.

Corona-virus, according to the World Health Organization, was first emerged in Wuhan, China last December. It has infected over 110,000 people in at least 110 countries and has become the biggest threat to the finance and economy.
Wal-Mart has been always show up top 5 on list of Fortune 500 companies. Their sales increased in tremendous amount. However, Wal-Mart have ethical dilemma as well. As the coronavirus outbreak spreads in the United States, retailers, warehouse and customer service-related chains face new challenges: some of their workers are getting sick.
According to report, Wal-Mart became one of the latest U.S. companies to confirm it had a sick employee on Monday. The female employee works in Cynthiana, a small town about 30 miles northeast of Lexington, Kentucky. She became the state’s first resident to test positive for COVID-19.

Does Wal-Mart responsible for employees’ death? While they provides employment positions for those who need the work, they are facing lawsuit problems where workers die from Coronavirus complications. Wal-Mart’s large scale within U.S have became the largest target where people gathered. Now even if policies required Wal-Mart to shut down stores that include nonessential items such as clothing or electronics, Wal-Mart super-center, their inventory, grocery department and services still remain a large amount of people to maintain active for customers.
Responsibility: Wal-Mart faces unlawful lawsuits from a worker’s family who died of a coronavirus complication, one of two such deaths reported in the same Chicago area store. The legal complaint was one of the first such public cases against retailers, alleging that Wal-Mart had failed to properly respond to the symptoms of COVID-19 among several workers in the store. It also accused the company of failing to share this information with workers, failing to protect them with gloves and other protective measures, or failing to take appropriate measures such as grooming. Therefore, one of their ethical difficulty is when they try their best to keep their employees safe, they still have to take the risk of employees since they are one necessary part of the society chain.
Prohibitory: disregarding the financial loss from prohibiting selling nonessential items, Wal-Mart has always faces ethical dilemma where they need to responsible for employees and customers. Their economical situation is relatively not important in current situation. This prohibitory increased the shopping traffic significantly which increases the risk of spreading of Coronavirus due to demands of customers. When customers can’t purchase items from shopping mall, they increased their demand on choosing Wal-Mart groceries store.
Reputation: Wal-Mart’s reputation is dominantly affecting the whole world previously. Now their reputation is impacted by those sick workers’ cases and customers’ panic. Panic is from society, their reputation is related to the society panic. Thus, their ethical dilemma is where they contribute to the society with receiving negative comments.
